चीन के नेशनल यूनिवर्सिटी आफ डिफेंस टेक्नोलाजी में हाइपरसोनिक इंफ्रारेड होमिंग प्रोग्राम के शोधकर्ताओं ने बताया है कि पारंपरिक युद्ध के परिणाम को हाइपरसोनिक मिसाइल से बदला जा सकता है। ऐसी मिसाइलें कम ऊंचाई पर उड़ान भरते समय अपने हीट सिग्नेचर के आधार पर लक्ष्य को खोजने, पहचानने और लाक करने में सक्षम होती हैं।

यह बताया जा रहा है कि अमेरिकी वायु सेना को भी ऐसी मिसाइलों से डर लगता है। अमेरिकी वायु सेना के अनुसार 1980 के दशक के बाद से खोए हुए सभी विमानों में से लगभग 90 फीसद को हीट सीकिंग मिसाइलों से मार गिराया गया था। एफ-22 जैसे स्टील्थ लड़ाकू विमानों को भी निशाना बनाया जा सकता था, क्योंकि उड़ान के दौरान एफ-22 की कोटिंग मैटेरियल आसानी से गर्म हो जाती है। ऐसे में हीट सीकिंग मिसाइलें गर्मी का पीछा करते हुए आसानी से विमान को निशाना बना सकती है।
